A wider cup covers more ground per pass, which on a gate, a chassis, a plate or a run of structural steel is exactly what you want. But diameter also means rim speed. The outer wires of a 100mm brush travel considerably further per revolution than those of a 75mm one, so at the same spindle speed they arrive harder, carry more energy, and take more off. It cleans faster and it is less forgiving.

That matters most in how the brush behaves when it catches. A knotted brush of this size meeting an edge, a weld bead, a bolt head or a lip can grab hard enough to pull the grinder out of your grip and throw it. The rules are straightforward: two hands with the side handle fitted, present the brush so its rotation carries it away from an edge rather than into it, and keep your body out of the line the machine will travel if it does snatch.

There is one specification that must be respected absolutely. Every brush has a maximum rated speed, and it must be at least as high as the no-load speed of your grinder. Many small angle grinders run at around eleven thousand revolutions a minute, which is a great deal for a 100mm knotted brush. Check both figures before fitting. A brush spun above its rating does not simply wear faster; it can come apart, and a knotted brush coming apart releases bundles of heavy wire at speed.
