The circular form, sometimes called a wheel brush, presents its wires around the rim rather than in a cup, and that shape suits a particular set of jobs. A wheel cleans along a line and into a groove: running down a weld seam, along the edge of a plate, into a channel or a corner, around the circumference of a shaft or a pipe. It also works well flat against a surface using the side of the wheel for larger areas. A cup brush, by contrast, works face down and covers area rather than following a line.

At 75mm it covers ground considerably faster than the 50mm wheel while still fitting into most of the places you would want a shank brush for, which is why it tends to become the default.

The 0.3mm crimped wire cleans rust, paint, varnish, scale and general soiling without cutting the parent metal.

A word on where shank brushes genuinely beat grinder brushes, since it is the reason to own both. Because a drill runs slowly and can be feathered on the trigger, you have far more control over how much is removed. On a part you are restoring rather than stripping, on a component with markings or a finish you want to keep, or on thin material that a grinder brush would heat and distort, that control is the whole difference. Shank brushes are the finesse end of wire brushing.

Keep the shank short in the chuck and run at moderate speed; the rated speed of a shank brush is far below what an angle grinder would deliver.
