A quarter inch round shank goes into the chuck of a drill or a die grinder. That is a completely different machine from an angle grinder, and the difference is speed. A grinder spins at around eleven thousand revolutions a minute and is built to remove material fast over a large area. A drill turns far slower and can be controlled with a trigger. So a shank mounted brush is not a smaller version of a cup brush; it is a tool for a different kind of work.

That work is detail. At 50mm this brush gets into places nothing larger will reach: inside a bore or a recess, into a corner, around a fitting, along a weld in a confined joint, into the webs of a casting. It cleans battery terminals and earth points, threads and stud ends, small parts and components, weld preparation on light work, and the fiddly areas of bodywork and machinery that a grinder would either not reach or would destroy.

The crimped 0.3mm wire suits that: springy filaments that clean without cutting into the metal or removing the shape of a small part.

Two practical points. Hold the shank short in the chuck, with as little of it sticking out as you can manage, because a long unsupported shank whips and the brush wobbles. And use a moderate drill speed. Shank brushes are rated for far lower speeds than grinder brushes, and over-speeding one makes it throw wires and can bend the shank.

Eye protection still matters, because a slower brush still sheds wire.
