Wood work generates an awkward number of hole sizes. A pilot here, a clearance hole there, a hole for a dowel, one for a cable, one for a bolt, and the sizes needed are rarely the ones a small mixed set contains. A few habits get the best from them. Clamp a piece of scrap behind the work so the bit breaks through into it rather than tearing out the back face. Withdraw the bit occasionally on a deep hole to clear the shavings, since packed shavings burn the bit and scorch the hole. And let the bit cut at speed rather than forcing it.
