Forty grit is for when there is real material to remove. Sixty is where most belt sanding actually happens: levelling and cleaning up after the coarse stage, taking a surface down evenly, removing old finish once the bulk is off, and preparing timber or steel to a state where a finishing sander can take over. It cuts at a good rate while leaving a scratch pattern shallow enough that the next grade can clear it without a fight.

That relationship is worth understanding rather than buying one grade and hoping. A belt sander is a levelling machine; it is not a finishing machine. Its job is to make a surface flat and even, and the finish is then produced by an orbital or a hand sander working up through finer grades. Trying to reach a finished surface with a belt sander alone leaves the long straight scratches that show up immediately under a coating.

The size must match the machine exactly, since belts do not adapt. Check the figure printed inside the old belt or on the sander body.

A few habits make belts last. Fit it the right way round following the arrow inside. Start the machine before it touches the work and lift it off before stopping, so the belt is at speed whenever it is in contact. Keep it moving along the grain on timber, because a belt sander held across the grain leaves marks that are very difficult to remove. And check the tracking, since a belt allowed to run against the edge of its housing will fray and fail early.
