Six hundred and ten by one hundred millimetres is a standard belt sander size, but standard does not mean universal. The belt has to match the machine's roller centres and drum width exactly: too short and it will not go on, too long and it will flap and come off, too wide or narrow and it will run off the edge of the rollers. The size is normally printed on the inside of the old belt or on the machine itself. Check it before ordering rather than after, since a belt of the wrong size cannot be adapted.

Forty grit is very coarse, and a belt sander is already the most aggressive sanding machine on a site. Together they remove material at a rate that surprises people the first time. That is exactly what you want for levelling a glued up timber panel, taking down a proud joint, cleaning and levelling steel plate, stripping heavy old finish from a door, bench or floor, and shaping timber quickly.

It is also exactly what you do not want on anything thin, veneered or already close to finished. A belt sander at 40 grit will go through a veneer in a second, and it will dish a soft timber if held in one place. Keep it moving, keep it flat, and never set it down while it is still running.

Two details worth knowing. Belts have a direction arrow printed on the inside, and fitting one backwards puts the joint into the cut where it can peel and fail. And belts load with resin, paint or aluminium, which is what usually finishes them rather than the abrasive wearing out; a loaded belt burnishes and burns instead of cutting.
