A great deal of the equipment installed here was not built to metric standards. Imported American and older British plant, generators, compressors, air conditioning equipment, marine and industrial machinery, and a good deal of electrical gear from those markets, all use inch dimensions. Their knockouts, gland entries, conduit fittings and cable glands are sized in fractions of an inch, and those sizes do not correspond to round metric numbers.

Which produces the situation this set solves. An electrician with metric step drills meets a fitting that wants a 1/2 inch hole, which is 12.7mm. His step drill offers 12mm and 14mm. Twelve is too small and the gland will not enter. Fourteen is too large, and a gland in an oversize hole does not seat, does not seal and will not hold the cable, which on outdoor or plant equipment means water in the enclosure. The near fit is worse than no fit, because it looks acceptable at the time.

Working in the correct units removes the problem entirely. If the equipment is specified in inches, drill in inches.

The three ranges overlap deliberately: 1/8 to 1/2 inch gives fine steps at the small end, 3/16 to 1/2 covers the middle, and 1/4 to 3/4 reaches the larger gland and knockout sizes.

HSS, heat treated, with a titanium coated surface, and like all step drills they are for sheet material rather than thick section.
