Put the machine in rotation only. Switch the hammer off.

An SDS hammer drill exists to strike as well as turn, and that hammer action is transmitted straight down the shank of whatever is in the chuck. Fit an adaptor and a socket, leave the hammer running, and you are delivering thousands of blows a minute into a socket, a fastener and a thread that were never designed to receive them. The adaptor batters out, the socket cracks, the fastener head deforms, and the whole assembly can come apart in your hand. Every SDS machine has a mode selector. Find it before you fit these.

With the hammer off, they are genuinely useful. A 50mm adaptor is short, so it keeps the socket close to the chuck where there is least wobble, and it lets one machine drill a hole and then drive the fixing without a second tool on site. For scaffolders, formwork carpenters, steel erectors and anyone assembling and stripping repeatedly, that matters.

The honest limits are worth knowing too. An SDS drill has a great deal of torque and no clutch, so it does not stop when a fastener seats. It will keep turning, and what happens next is a stripped thread, a snapped bolt, or the machine twisting hard in your hands. It is not a substitute for an impact driver, which delivers rotational blows and is designed for exactly this work. Use these to run fasteners down quickly, then finish by hand or with a torque wrench where a figure matters.

Also worth saying: chrome plated hand sockets should not be used on any machine that hammers. On an adaptor in a drill running in rotation only they are fine.

The material is 40Cr, a chromium alloy steel, which is the usual specification for drive components of this kind.
