Seventy five millimetres of abrasive covers ground quickly. On an open surface, a long weld seam, a plate edge or a run of fabricated steel it will get through work that would take a long time at one or two inches, and it is the natural choice when the area is large but a grinder is still too coarse or cannot be brought to bear.

The caution is the same one that applies to any large accessory on a small shaft. A three inch wheel is a considerable mass turning on a 6.3mm stalk, and it has a rated speed that is lower than that of the smaller wheels precisely because its rim travels further per revolution. Run it at full drill speed and it will vibrate, wobble, wear unevenly and throw flaps. Use a low speed, keep the shaft as short in the chuck as the work allows, and support the drill with both hands.

It is also the point at which it is worth asking whether the job really wants a shank wheel. If the surface is flat, open and accessible, a flap disc on an angle grinder will do it faster and with far less strain on the tool. The three inch wheel earns its place where you need that coverage in a position, a recess or on a component that rules a grinder out.

Sixty grit makes it a stock removal wheel: welds, scale, rust, burrs and general cleaning up.
