Most drill sets step in whole millimetres, or worse, in whatever sizes the maker thought would look good in a case. The result is familiar: you need 6.5mm and you own 6 and 7. Six is too tight and seven is too loose, and you end up drilling the small one and wallowing it out, which gives an oversize, out of round hole and a fixing that never sits properly. A set with half millimetre steps simply does not put you in that position. Whatever the drawing, the fitting or the bolt calls for, it is in the box.

One genuine difference from the hex shank bits listed alongside these is worth knowing before you buy. These are ground to a 118 degree general angle, which is the traditional geometry, and a 118 degree point has a chisel edge at its centre that does not cut. In steel that means the bit will skate before it bites unless you give it a centre punch mark to sit in. It is not a fault and it is what most drills in the world look like; it simply means a punch and a hammer are part of the process. The 135 degree split point bits self centre and do not need one. Neither is superior overall, but on a smooth or curved surface, or overhead, the difference is real.

These are plain HSS rather than cobalt, so they suit mild steel, aluminium, brass, plastic and timber. Stainless and hardened steels want the cobalt bits.
