Eighty sits between coarse removal and fine finishing, and in a fabrication shop it is often the most used grade of the three. It still cuts, so it will take down light weld and clean a surface at a reasonable rate, but it leaves a finish good enough for paint on most steelwork without needing another stage after it. For a great deal of general work, going 60 then 80 is the whole process.

That is why it is worth having on the shelf rather than treating fine grades as something only finishers need. The alternative, which people fall into, is doing everything with a coarse wheel and then spending far longer than necessary trying to make the result acceptable.

At two inches it covers ground usefully while still reaching into fabricated joints, along seams, inside larger sections and around fittings, which is the working range of a shank mounted wheel.

One habit that improves the result: keep the wheel moving across the work rather than holding it in one place. A flap wheel held still cuts a hollow, because the abrasive keeps working the same spot, and on a visible surface a hollow catches the light and shows through paint far more obviously than a scratch does. Sweep it steadily.

The shaft should sit short in the chuck, the speed should suit the diameter, and the pressure should be light enough that the flaps are wearing rather than tearing.
