At 120 the abrasive removes very little material. What it does is take out the scratch pattern left by 80 and leave a smooth, even surface ready for coating, sealing, polishing or simply for being looked at. On a timber floor or deck it is the grade that decides how the finish will look once oil or lacquer goes on, because any scratch still present will be highlighted rather than hidden by a coating. On steel it prepares a surface for paint or for polishing.

Asking it to do more than that is the common mistake. Fine abrasive on unlevelled material clogs, glazes and generates heat while achieving very little, and it is an expensive way to make no progress. Level with the coarse and medium grades first; use this one last and briefly.

It is also worth cleaning the surface between grades on large area work. Grit from a coarse disc left lying on a floor gets picked up by the fine disc and dragged across the surface, putting single deep scratches into work you have just finished. A sweep or a vacuum between stages prevents a fault that is otherwise very hard to explain.

The hook and loop backing means a sander or polisher with a matching 230mm pad, not an angle grinder, and the machine's speed must suit the disc.
