1/4" Hex-Driver Drill Bit (5.0)

A conventional drill bit has a plain round shank held by a three jaw chuck squeezing on it. That grip is friction alone, and friction has a limit. As the bit gets larger the torque needed to turn it climbs, and at some point the shank starts to slip and spin inside the jaws. Once it has spun it polishes itself and the jaws, and from then on it slips more easily than before. Anyone who has drilled a larger hole and then found the bit shank scored and shiny has met it.

A 1/4 inch hex shank cannot do that. It is a six sided bar held in a six sided socket, so the drive is mechanical rather than frictional and it does not depend on how hard somebody tightened a chuck. That matters most at exactly this end of the range, where the bits are big enough to load the drive but still small enough that people expect a chuck to cope.

The other half of it is speed of working. The bit changes in one movement, with one hand, without a chuck key and without putting the tool down. On a job that alternates drilling and driving, which is most fixing work, that adds up quickly.
