T Universal Spark Plug Socket Wrench (21mm)

Like the 16mm version, this is a deep socket with a spring retainer rather than an ordinary socket, and both features exist for the same reason. The depth swallows the whole plug including its insulator. The spring grips the plug so that when it comes loose it lifts out with the tool instead of dropping back down the well — and a plug dropped down a well, or a new one dropped in, can crack its insulator and cause a misfire that looks like a faulty part.

The T-handle format is well suited to plug work. Plugs are not tightened hard, but they sit deep and often at an angle in a crowded engine bay where a ratchet has no room to swing. A T-bar turns continuously, holds the socket square, and spins fast once the plug is free.

Chrome vanadium socket with a heat-treated spring. The heat treatment is specifically what keeps the spring gripping over years; a spring that has lost its temper simply stops holding the plug, which is the whole point of the tool. The handle is dipped for grip when your hands are oily.

Some advice worth passing on. Blow or brush the plug well clean before undoing anything, because grit that falls into an open cylinder does damage. Start every plug by hand — a cross-threaded plug in an aluminium head turns a fifteen-minute service into a cylinder head repair. And do not over-tighten; plugs seal on a crush washer and have modest torque figures, and heavy-handed fitting damages both the washer and the thread.

On older engines that have not been serviced in a long time, penetrating oil and patience beat force. A snapped plug in a head is a difficult extraction.
