Four inches is the size most workshops reach for first, and if you are only going to own one puller this is usually the one. It opens far enough to take the great majority of pulleys, bearings and hubs that come across a bench in a day, while still being light enough to hold in one hand and set up quickly. Anything smaller starts to run out of jaw; anything bigger starts to be a nuisance in a confined engine bay.

Where this tool earns its keep is in the two-jaw configuration, and it is worth understanding why the two-in-one design exists at all. Very often the part you need to remove is not open all the way round. A pulley sits behind a bracket, a gear has a web with only two windows in it, a hub has an arm in the way on one side. Three jaws need three clear points and there are only two. Drop one jaw off and the same tool becomes a two-jaw puller, gripping across the diameter and pulling perfectly straight, which is what makes the difference between doing the job and taking half the assembly apart to get at it.

The construction is medium carbon steel, forged rather than cast, with chrome-plated jaws. The forging is the part that matters when you are heaving on the screw with a spanner: forged steel deforms before it breaks, so an overloaded jaw opens up and warns you instead of letting go all at once.

The jobs this size covers: alternator and water pump pulleys, timing gears, small brake and clutch components, bearings on gearbox and pump shafts, fan hubs, and the steering and suspension parts that are pressed rather than bolted. It is also the size that spends most of its life in an agricultural workshop, where small pumps and machinery parts come apart weekly.

A few things make the difference between an easy pull and a broken part. Wind the centre screw down onto the shaft end, not onto a thread you will need afterwards — a scrap bolt or a puller cap in between protects it. Keep the pull square; if the tool starts to lean, back off and reset rather than forcing it. Heat applied to the outer part, not the shaft, will release a stubborn fit far more reliably than more force will, because you want the outside to grow away from the inside.
