At three inches this is the smallest puller in the set, and small is exactly what it is for. The jaws close down tight and the whole tool stays compact, so it works in the places where a bigger puller cannot even be offered up to the job — inside a motor end housing, between a pulley and a bracket, down beside a shaft that cannot be moved out of the way. Plenty of parts that need pulling are perfectly easy to grip and impossible to reach, and reach is what you are buying here.

It arrives as a two-in-one: the same body takes two jaws or three. Three jaws is the arrangement to use whenever the part is round and free all the way around — a bearing on a shaft, a small pulley, a fan, an impeller. Three points of contact spread the load evenly and, more importantly, keep the puller centred on the shaft as it pulls. That matters more than force does. A part pulled off-centre binds against the shaft and jams harder the more you turn the screw, and it is the usual reason a puller slips off and everyone decides they need a bigger one.

The body is forged from medium carbon steel rather than cast. Forging drives the grain of the steel along the shape of the jaw instead of leaving it random, so the jaw bends before it snaps. That is a safety point as much as a durability one, because a cast jaw that fails does it suddenly and sends the pieces somewhere. The jaws are chrome plated, which keeps them from rusting in a damp workshop and lets you wipe oil off them rather than scrub it off.

A little penetrating oil left to work for ten minutes will often save you more effort than a bigger tool would.
