Six inches is where a puller stops being a hand tool you wave about and starts being one you set up. The jaws open wide enough for brake drums, larger bearings, big pulleys and coupling halves, and the leverage on the centre screw is correspondingly greater — which is precisely why the material specification matters more at this size than it did at three or four inches.
The body is forged from medium carbon steel. Every puller looks much the same in a photograph and cheap ones are frequently cast, so this is the line worth reading. Casting pours molten metal into a mould and leaves the grain structure of the metal random; forging beats the steel into shape while it is hot, so the grain follows the curve of the jaw and runs along the direction the load is trying to pull it apart. The practical result is that a forged jaw under excessive load bends and lets go slowly, while a cast one lets go instantly and in pieces. At six inches you can generate enough force to find that difference out.
Both the two-jaw and three-jaw setups come in the box on the same body. Use three whenever the part is round and clear, because three keeps the pull centred; drop to two when access allows only two points of grip. The choice is dictated by the job, not by preference, which is the reason a two-in-one is more useful than owning one of each.
Work at this size: brake drums and hubs, wheel bearings, large pulleys and flywheel components, coupling halves on pumps and compressors, gearbox and differential bearings, and the heavier pressed fits on agricultural and industrial machinery. It is a common size in a lorry or bus workshop, where nothing is quite small enough for a four-inch.
The jaws are chrome plated. On a tool that gets dropped in oil and left in a damp corner, plating is the reason the jaws still slide freely on the arms a year later rather than seizing solid with rust.
The buyers are commercial vehicle and bus workshops, agricultural and plantation machinery repairers, pump and compressor servicing, and engineering shops. Hardware dealers who supply garages rather than households carry this size and up.
Take the strain slowly and let the tool tell you what is happening. A part that will not move under steady pressure will usually come free if you leave the puller loaded and tap the end of the shaft, or warm the outer component so it expands away from the shaft. What does not work is simply pulling harder — that is how shafts are bent and threads stripped. Keep everyone out of the line of the pull and wear eye protection.
