Eight inches is the heavy end of the range, bought for the jobs where the smaller pullers have already been tried and have already failed. The jaws open far enough for large pulleys, big coupling halves, lorry and tractor hubs, and the bearings on industrial machinery — components that were pressed together in a factory and have then spent years rusting into one another.
Everything about using a puller changes at this size, and it is mostly a matter of the forces involved. Turning the centre screw with a spanner on a tool this large develops a very large load in a very small space, and that load is stored in the part like a spring right up until the moment it releases. So the safety habits stop being advice and become the job: nobody stands in the line of the pull, eye protection goes on, and a heavy rag or a board is draped over the assembly so that when the part comes free it goes nowhere. Parts do not slide off gently at this size — they leave.
The construction is forged medium carbon steel with chrome-plated jaws, and the forging is doing real work here. A forged jaw carries its grain along the line of the load and will distort visibly under an overload before it fails; cast jaws in the same situation break without notice and throw fragments. When you are applying this much force, a tool that warns you is worth a great deal.
Two jaws or three, on the same body, as with the rest of the range. On heavy work the three-jaw setup is used wherever the part is clear all round, because keeping the pull centred is what stops a large component from cocking over and jamming solid on its shaft. Two jaws are for the awkward ones where a casting, an arm or a housing leaves you only two places to grip.
The work: truck and tractor hubs and drums, flywheel and clutch components, large pump and compressor couplings, main bearings on industrial machinery, gears and sprockets on plant and conveyor equipment, and marine and generator drive components.
The buyers are commercial vehicle and heavy equipment workshops, plantation and agricultural engineering, factory maintenance departments, and marine and generator servicing. Hardware dealers supplying industry rather than households stock this size.
Preparation saves more of these jobs than force does. Soak the joint in penetrating oil and give it time — an hour is not too long on something badly seized. Heat the outer part so it expands away from the shaft, never the shaft itself. Load the puller, then shock it with a hammer blow on the end of the centre screw rather than winding endlessly. And protect the shaft end with a cap or a sacrificial bolt, because a stripped thread turns a bearing job into a machining job. Message us on WhatsApp for a price on this size or on the matched set.
