T-type Crv Wrench (17mm)

Seventeen millimetres is a suspension and running-gear size on most vehicles: hub and knuckle bolts, lower arm and link fixings, shock absorber mountings, larger subframe and crossmember bolts, and on some vehicles the wheel nuts themselves. It also appears on heavier engine mounts and on agricultural and plant machinery in quantity.

The cross bar is what makes this size work. With a hand on each side of the T you apply force in a straight pull with the socket held square on the fastener, which is a steadier and safer way to move something stiff than hanging off the end of a single-handled tool. It also keeps the load balanced on the fastener head rather than trying to tip the socket off it.

Forged chrome vanadium, heat treated and chrome plated. At this size the forging matters most: the torque going through a 17mm socket end is several times what a 6mm sees, and a socket that spreads under that load will start rounding the corners of a fastener that is expensive to extract once ruined.

Still, be clear on the limits. A T-bar's leverage is fixed by the width of its cross bar, which is far less than a breaker bar gives. On a seized hub or suspension bolt — and in this climate they seize — the right sequence is penetrating oil, then a six-point socket on a long bar, then this tool for the speed of running it out. Pulling on one end of a T-bar to break something loose twists the shaft and loads one corner of the head.

And never set final torque on suspension or hub fasteners with a T-bar. Those figures exist because the consequences of getting them wrong are serious; use a torque wrench.
