On most vehicles 12mm holds engine ancillaries and their brackets — alternator and compressor mounts, pump and pulley fixings, exhaust heat shields, gearbox and bell housing covers, seat and seatbelt fittings, and the heavier body and subframe brackets. Several of those are down the back of an engine or under the car, reached past other components.

That is where a T-handle beats a ratchet. A ratchet needs swing room, and behind an engine there is none; a T-bar turns continuously in a straight line, so it works wherever the shaft can reach even if nothing can swing. And unlike a spanner, the socket end cannot slip off the flats when you cannot see what you are doing.

Forged chrome vanadium, heat treated and chrome plated. The forging is what stops the socket end spreading under load, which is what causes rounded fasteners; the plating resists rust in humid conditions and wipes clean of oil.

Be realistic about torque at this size. 12mm fasteners on brackets are often tightened harder than the smaller sizes, and while a T-bar gives good two-handed control it does not give the leverage of a breaker bar. If something does not move with steady pressure, do not turn it into a fight — use a socket on a long bar, or heat and penetrating oil. Levering hard on one end of a T-bar twists the shaft and puts the load on one corner of the fastener, which is how a 12mm head gets rounded.

Equally, do not over-tighten with it. Bracket bolts have a proper torque, and a T-bar makes it easy to exceed.
