Dual Filter Wrench

It drives from a 1/2" square drive, which is the whole point. That means a ratchet, an extension bar and a universal joint — so you can reach a filter that sits deep in the engine bay, above a subframe, or behind other components where there is no room to swing a pair of filter pliers. On a great many modern vehicles the filter is in exactly such a place, and a cap wrench on a long extension is the only practical way in.

It suits filters within 102mm.

The cap pattern also grips the filter differently. Where a pliers wrench squeezes the can from the side, a cap fits over the end and drives on the pressed flutes, spreading the load around the whole circumference. That means far less risk of crushing the can — and a crushed filter is a genuinely bad afternoon, because once it is deformed there is nothing left to grip.

The honest trade-off against the pliers type is fit. A cap wrench works properly only on filters whose end profile it matches; a pliers wrench adjusts to almost anything between 63.5 and 116mm. Most workshops end up owning both: the pliers wrench as the general answer, the cap wrench for the vehicles where access decides the matter.

The usual filter advice applies. Grip and turn steadily rather than jerking. When fitting the new filter, oil the rubber seal and tighten by hand — around three quarters of a turn after the seal contacts — because filters that will not come off next time are filters that were fitted with a wrench. And let the engine cool first: the oil coming out is hot, and it comes out faster than people expect.
