Cross Wrench (18")

That matters more than it sounds. Torque is force multiplied by distance, so a longer arm moves a tight nut with less effort — and wheel nuts are routinely over-tightened, often by an impact wrench in someone else's workshop. A nut that will not shift on a 14" wrench will frequently come loose on an 18" one without any change in technique. If you have ever stood on a wheel wrench at the roadside, this is the tool that would have avoided it.

The four-arm format gives you a hand on each side, pulling in line with the wheel so the socket stays square on the nut instead of tipping off it. The fourth arm is a square drive that accepts ordinary sockets and an extension bar, which is how you reach a nut recessed inside an alloy wheel, and how the same tool becomes a two-handed driver for anything else.

High quality carbon steel, chrome plated and quenched. The quenching hardens the socket ends so they keep their shape under the torque a wheel nut demands — the alternative is a socket that spreads and rounds the nut, which turns a puncture into a recovery.

The honest trade-off against the 14" is bulk. Eighteen inches takes real space in a boot and is more awkward in the confined gap beside a wheel arch on a small car. For a workshop, or for a vehicle with room, the leverage is worth it. For a small car's boot kit, the 14" is more practical.

And the same rule as always: loosen and run down with it, then set the final torque with a torque wrench. A long wrench makes it very easy to over-tighten, and over-tightened nuts stretch studs and warp brake discs.
