Cross Wrench (14")

That balanced pull is the whole design. Turning a wheel nut with a single-handled wrench tips the socket off the nut and puts the force where you do not want it. With a cross wrench you take an arm in each hand and turn, and the socket stays square. It is also far faster to spin off a loose nut — you simply rotate the cross.

This 14" version carries 17, 19 and 21mm, which between them cover the overwhelming majority of cars, vans and three-wheelers in Sri Lanka. The fourth arm is a square drive, and that is the part people overlook: it takes ordinary sockets and an extension bar, so the same tool reaches a recessed nut inside an alloy wheel, or turns any other socket you own when you need a two-handed grip.

It is high quality carbon steel, chrome plated and quenched. Quenching is the hardening step that lets the socket ends hold their shape under the substantial torque a wheel nut needs — an unhardened socket spreads and rounds the nut, and a rounded wheel nut at the roadside is a serious problem.

The 14" size is the compact one, and that is a real choice rather than a lesser version. It fits in a boot or under a seat without taking the space a larger one does, and it is easier to use in the confined space beside a wheel. The 18" version gives more leverage for stubborn nuts, at the cost of bulk.

One piece of advice that matters. Use it to loosen and to run nuts down, then set the final torque with a torque wrench. Over-tightened wheel nuts stretch studs and warp discs; under-tightened ones let a wheel come off. Both happen because somebody guessed with a cross wrench.
