Auto Circuit Tester

It is a probe with a bulb and an earth lead. Clip the alligator clip to a good earth, touch the probe to the point you are testing, and the bulb lights if there is voltage. That is the whole operation, and its virtue is speed — you can work along a circuit from the fuse to the connector to the component in under a minute and find where the supply stops.

It handles 6, 12 and 24 volt systems, which covers cars, motorcycles, three-wheelers, older 6V vehicles, and the 24V systems on trucks, buses and plant.

The sharp probe is a deliberate feature. It pierces insulation to test a conductor mid-run without cutting the loom apart, which is how you check continuity along a wire that disappears into a harness. Use it sparingly and seal the puncture afterwards, because a pierced insulation in a damp engine bay is a future corrosion fault.

It comes with two spare bulbs and a probe cap — sensible, because the bulb is the part that fails and a tester with a blown bulb reads "no power" everywhere, which sends you chasing a fault that does not exist. Check the tester on a known live point before trusting a negative result. That single habit prevents most of the wasted time these tools cause.

Be clear about its limits. A test lamp tells you voltage is present; it does not tell you how much, and it will light on a circuit with high resistance that cannot actually carry load. A corroded earth or a partly broken wire will often still light a tester and still fail to run the component. For that you need a multimeter and a voltage-drop test. The lamp finds the obvious faults fast; the meter finds the subtle ones.

Also: do not use it on airbag, ABS or engine management circuits, where the current it draws can damage sensitive modules.
