With a headband shield you hold the electrode with one hand and steady that hand, the work, or a filler rod with the other. You nod the shield down as you strike and it stays there. On a running bead, on out-of-position work, on anything longer than a tack, that is the difference between a controlled weld and a wandering one.

The moveable glass is the feature worth understanding. The filter lens flips up so you can inspect the weld, chip slag, reposition the work or line up the next run without taking the mask off your head. That sounds minor and is not: taking a mask on and off thirty times an hour is how people end up striking an arc before the shield is down, which is exactly how arc eye happens.

The shell is impact resistant and measures 300 x 225mm, covering the face and throat. Throat coverage matters because arc ultraviolet burns exposed skin like severe sunburn, and the underside of the chin catches reflected light from the workpiece.

Some safety that is genuinely worth reading. Arc eye is caused by ultraviolet, not by brightness — so turning your head, squinting or wearing sunglasses protects you not at all, and the pain arrives hours later when the damage is already done. Use the correct filter shade for the current you are running: too light does not protect, too dark makes you lean in towards the arc to see, which is its own hazard. Replace any lens that is cracked or heavily pitted with spatter. And remember that anyone nearby is exposed too — put up a screen, or give them a shield.

Wear gloves and cover your arms. Welders get sunburnt through a shirt in a way that surprises people the first time.
