13" Welding Gloves (330mm, Split Cowhide)

Split cowhide is the right leather for the job because of how it behaves under heat. Spatter lands on a welding glove constantly — small globules of molten steel at well over a thousand degrees — and split leather chars and sheds them rather than melting or igniting. Any synthetic material in a glove, and most thin leathers, will melt onto skin instead, which turns a minor burn into a serious one. Leather also insulates against the radiant heat coming off the workpiece, which is what makes a glove uncomfortable long before spatter does.

The 13" length is doing deliberate work. A short glove leaves the wrist exposed, and the wrist is where the sleeve gaps when you raise your arm to weld — which is precisely the position spatter falls into. 330mm carries the protection well up the forearm and, just as importantly, overlaps a sleeve so nothing can drop inside the cuff.

Ultraviolet is the other reason for length, and the one people forget. Arc UV burns skin like severe sunburn through hours of exposure, and the forearms take the most of it. Covered forearms are why experienced welders wear long sleeves in hot weather while everyone else wonders why.

The practical trade-off with any welding glove is dexterity. Thick leather is protective and clumsy — you will not pick a small part out of a tray wearing these. That is normal and correct; a glove thin enough for fine work is a glove that will not stop spatter. Keep a pair of light gloves for handling and these for welding.

Replace them when the leather has hardened, cracked or burned through at the fingertips. A glove with a hole in it collects spatter rather than shedding it.
