Electrode Holder (500A, COPPER)

It accepts electrodes from 2.5mm to 9.5mm (3/32" to 3/8"). That upper end is what separates it from the 300A holder: 5mm, 6mm and larger rods are used for heavy structural work, thick plate, hard-facing and repair welds on plant and machinery, and a smaller holder simply will not clamp them properly. A rod that is not gripped square arcs at the jaw and wanders as you weld.

At 250mm it is longer than the 300A holder, which does two useful things: it puts more distance between your hand and the arc, and it gives more leverage for angling the electrode into a joint.

The jaw is brass with an iron upper body. Brass matters at this current more than at 300A, because resistance at the contact point turns into heat in proportion to the current flowing through it. A poor connection at 500A produces a genuinely hot handle and an unstable arc. The brass jaw keeps that contact resistance low and resists the pitting that arcing causes.

CE approved, so the insulation and current rating are tested rather than claimed.

The rating is about heat over time as much as peak current. A holder run near its limit at a high duty cycle gets hot, and heat is what degrades the insulation and softens the spring. If you are welding continuously at high current, the 800A holder runs cooler on the same electrode range and will last longer.

Safety points that apply at any current but bite harder at this one: never change electrodes bare-handed with the machine live, never lay a live holder on the work or the bench, and inspect the cable where it enters the holder, because that flexing point is where insulation fails first.
