16" Welding Gloves (400mm, Split Cowhide)

Length is protection. Sixteen inches carries split cowhide most of the way to the elbow, which matters in two situations that catch people out. Welding overhead or at height puts your forearms directly beneath falling spatter, and gravity does the rest. And raising an arm to weld pulls a sleeve back and opens a gap at the wrist — the one place a glove absolutely must not end. A 400mm cuff overlaps well past that gap.

The half lining is the specification that separates these from the 13" pair. A lining sits between the leather and your skin, and it does two things: it adds insulation against radiant heat, so you can hold position near hot work for longer before your hands force you to stop, and it makes the glove more comfortable against sweat, which in this climate is not a small consideration.

Split cowhide is the correct material for arc welding. Spatter is molten steel, and split leather chars and sheds it. Synthetics and thin leathers melt onto skin instead and turn a small burn into a bad one.

The other reason for covered forearms is ultraviolet. Arc UV burns exposed skin like severe sunburn over a session, and forearms take the worst of it — which is why welders wear long sleeves in the heat while everyone around them wonders why.

Be realistic about dexterity. These are thicker and longer than the 13" gloves and you will not do anything fine while wearing them. That is the correct trade: a glove you can feel a small screw through is a glove that will not stop spatter. Keep light gloves for handling and these for the arc.

Retire them once the leather has gone hard and cracked, or burned through at a fingertip — a glove with a hole collects spatter instead of shedding it, which is worse than no glove at all.
