The case for it is speed and cost. For short tack welds, for occasional work, for a training shop that needs a dozen of them, and for someone standing near the work rather than doing it, a handheld shield is quicker to pick up and put down than a headband is to fit. At 470 x 225mm the shield is generously sized, covering the face and throat rather than just the eyes — which matters, because the arc burns skin as readily as it damages eyes.

The shell is impact resistant, which protects against spatter and against the sharp report of slag flying off a cooling weld.

The honest limitation is in the name. It occupies a hand. That is fine for tacking, where you position the work first and then strike, but for a running bead you want one hand on the holder and one steadying the work or your arm — which is exactly why the head-mounted mask exists. If you weld for more than a few minutes at a time, buy that one instead.

The safety here is not optional and is worth stating plainly. Looking at an arc without a proper filter causes photokeratitis — "arc eye" — which feels like sand under the eyelids some hours later and is genuinely agonising. It is caused by ultraviolet light, not brightness, so squinting or turning away is no protection at all, and neither are sunglasses. The same UV burns exposed skin like severe sunburn. Anyone standing near a welder needs a shield or a screen, not just the person holding the electrode, and that includes an apprentice watching.

Always make sure the filter lens is the right shade for the current you are running, and replace a lens that is cracked or pitted with spatter, because a damaged filter no longer protects properly.
