Heavy beam, thick plate, large channel and substantial box section have enough mass that a smaller magnet cannot hold them at an angle against gravity — and a magnet that almost holds is worse than none, because it fails at the moment you commit to a tack. At 75lb, and with a 125mm face giving a long reference edge and a large contact patch, this one holds heavy sections steady and keeps them from rocking out of square.

It sets 45, 90 and 135 degrees: mitres and bracing, square corners and T-joints, and the outside of obtuse angles where a conventional clamp has nothing to grip.

With heavy work the technique matters as much as the tool. Always use two holders spaced along the joint — a single magnet, however strong, lets the work pivot around it. Tack both ends before running any length of bead, because a cooling weld pulls with far more force than any magnet resists, and on heavy section that pull will drag a joint out of square before your eyes. Clean the faces every time: spatter and grinding dust prevent the magnet seating flat, and on a face this size a small piece of debris tilts the whole reference.

A real safety point at this strength. A 75lb magnet snapping onto steel will crush a finger caught between the two, and it will take a wristwatch, a ring or a steel rule with it. Bring it in from the side and slide it home rather than presenting it face-on, and keep loose steel items away from it.

Heat is the enemy of any permanent magnet, so keep it back from the arc — a magnet that has been cooked never fully recovers.
