Magnetic Welding Holder (10LBS/1.5"/40mm, CS-45)

This is the 10lb version, 40mm across the working face, and it is the small one deliberately. Light holders are for light work — thin sheet, small brackets, box section, angle iron, model and repair work, and holding a piece steady for a single tack before the joint takes over. On material that thin a heavy magnet is a nuisance rather than a help, because it drags the work about when you position it and it is awkward inside a small assembly.

It holds at 45, 90 and 135 degrees. Ninety is the one everyone uses, for square corners and T-joints. Forty-five is for mitres and bracing. A hundred and thirty-five is the outside of an obtuse corner, which is exactly the case where clamping anything conventional is impossible.

The body is carbon steel around a strong permanent magnet. There is nothing to switch on and nothing to fail — you place it, it holds, you pull it off.

Three pieces of practical advice that make the difference between this being useful and being frustrating. Clean the faces before use: welding produces spatter and grinding produces steel dust, and both stick to a magnet and stop it sitting flat, which is how a square joint comes out a degree off. Keep it away from the arc where you can, because heat weakens a permanent magnet and enough of it will demagnetise one permanently. And treat it as a positioner, not a clamp — it holds the angle while you tack, but it will not resist the pull of a cooling weld, so tack both ends before you run a bead.
