This is the set you buy first. Twelve pieces, 1/2" drive, and nothing in the case that you will not use — which is the honest advantage of a small set over a large one.
The ten sockets run 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22 and 24mm. That list is not arbitrary: those are the sizes that actually turn up on vehicles, machinery, furniture fixings and structural bolts in Sri Lanka, and the gaps in the run — 11mm, 18mm, 20mm — are the sizes you meet far less often. A twelve-piece set is a considered selection rather than a cut-down one.
They are six-point sockets, and for a first set that is the right choice. A six-point socket bears on the flats of the nut rather than the corners, so it grips a tight or slightly rounded fastener where a twelve-point would slip and round it off completely. Twelve-point sockets are quicker to engage in awkward positions, but on the sort of seized, rusted, over-torqued fastener you meet on real work, six-point wins every time.
The ratchet is a 72-tooth quick-release. Tooth count decides the swing arc — 72 teeth means the handle only needs about five degrees of movement before it catches the next tooth, so it works in confined spaces where a coarse 24-tooth ratchet simply jams against the obstruction. Quick release means a button drops the socket off rather than you levering it off with a screwdriver, which matters when your hands are oily.
A 5" extension bar is included, which is the piece that turns the set from bench-only into something that reaches down beside an engine or into a recessed bolt hole.
Everything is quality chrome vanadium — the standard alloy for hand sockets, hard enough to resist the corners wearing round but tough enough not to crack under a sharp pull.
The buyers are people building a first toolkit: apprentice mechanics, three-wheeler and motorcycle owners doing their own maintenance, general maintenance staff, and households that want something better than a supermarket set. Hardware shops sell this size steadily because it is the natural first purchase, and because it is what people replace a broken cheap set with.
If you already own a 1/2" set, the honest advice is to look at the 23 or 32-piece instead, which add spark plug sockets, a universal joint and a much wider size range rather than duplicating what you have. Ask on WhatsApp and we will price them side by side, delivered island-wide.
