Torx fasteners turn up far more than they used to, and when they do, nothing else will shift them properly — which is what makes this eight-piece impact Torx bit set worth having before you meet one rather than afterwards.
A Torx head is a six-pointed star, and its advantage over a hex or a cross-head is that the driving faces are almost perpendicular to the direction of turn. That means the tool does not try to cam out or push itself out of the recess under load, so far more torque can be applied through a smaller head without damaging it. Manufacturers like that, which is why Torx appears throughout modern vehicles — brake calipers and carriers, seat belt and seat mountings, suspension components, engine covers, transmission housings, body and structural fixings.
The sizes here are T30, T40, T45, T50, T55, T60, T70 and T80. That is the large end of the Torx range, and deliberately so: these are the sizes used on the structural and high-torque fasteners that actually need an impact gun. Brake caliper carrier bolts in particular are usually large Torx and usually extremely tight and corroded, which is exactly the combination an impact wrench is for.
The material is chrome molybdenum, heat treated, with a chemical molybdenum corrosion coating. That specification is the whole point. An impact wrench delivers torque as thousands of hammer blows per minute, and a chrome-plated hand bit under that treatment cracks and throws fragments. Chrome molybdenum is chosen for toughness rather than outright hardness, so it absorbs the shock and deforms rather than shattering — and a bit is a slender, highly stressed shape where that matters even more than on a socket.
The buyers are vehicle and commercial vehicle workshops, brake and suspension specialists, plant and agricultural mechanics, body repair shops, and hardware dealers supplying the motor trade.
Some working advice. Seat the bit fully into the recess before pulling the trigger, since a Torx head that is only partly engaged will round out and a rounded Torx is very difficult to remove. Clean corrosion and road dirt out of the recess first — a socket full of packed grit will not seat, and that is the usual reason a Torx head is destroyed. Never use chrome hand bits or adaptors with an impact gun. And check for the matching size rather than forcing the nearest one. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price, or with the impact socket sets.
