Ten millimetres in a deep socket earns its place through one job above all others: battery terminals. A great many terminal clamps use a 10mm nut on a bolt long enough that a standard socket simply will not go over it, and battery work is exactly the situation where you do not want to be improvising with a spanner in a confined space next to live terminals.
Beyond that, 10mm deep covers the enormous population of M6 studs — cover and shield fixings, heat shields, bracket and clamp studs, exhaust and manifold fasteners on smaller engines, earth points on long bolts, and the nuts that sit at the bottom of recessed holes where a short socket cannot reach.
It is also, like its standard counterpart, one of the sockets that disappears most often, so it is worth owning a spare.
There is a genuine reason to keep both lengths rather than replacing standards with deeps, and it is about stiffness. A long barrel twists a little more under load than a short one, and it holds the ratchet further from the work so any misalignment is amplified along its length. On a seized or badly corroded fastener that difference is enough to matter — the standard socket is the one less likely to let a nut round off. Use a standard whenever it reaches, and a deep when it does not.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the internal grain of the steel around the hexagonal form rather than cutting across it at the six corners, which is where all the stress in a socket concentrates. Chrome vanadium supplies hardness and wear resistance from the chromium and grain refinement and toughness from the vanadium.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, auto-electricians working on batteries and earth points, appliance and machinery technicians, maintenance staff, and hardware dealers, who sell 10mm faster than any other size in either length.
One safety note that matters especially around batteries. Never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench — plated hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under impact hammering and can crack and throw pieces. And when working on a battery, disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last, so a spanner touching bodywork cannot complete a circuit.
