Thirteen millimetres deep is one of the most useful sockets in a workshop, because it combines the second-commonest fastener size with the situation that most often defeats a standard socket. Thirteen is the European M8 head size, and M8 studs are everywhere — exhaust manifolds, turbo and downpipe flanges, inlet manifolds, alternator and ancillary brackets, pump and housing studs, clamp fixings and chassis fittings.
Manifold studs deserve a mention because they are the classic use and the classic trouble. A manifold nut lives in heat and exhaust gas, corrodes into place, and sits on a stud whose thread projects past it — so a standard socket cannot even reach it. If you work on exhausts at all, a 13mm deep socket is not optional.
They are also the fasteners most likely to shear, and that is worth some advice. A corroded manifold stud will snap rather than turn if you simply pull harder, and a snapped stud in a cylinder head is a drilling and extraction job. The productive sequence is penetrating oil left to work for a real twenty minutes, gentle heat on the nut so it expands away from the stud, then working the nut back and forth in small movements rather than one long pull. That frees far more of them than force does.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. The matt finish is a working choice rather than a cosmetic one: it does not throw glare back under a work lamp when you are peering into an engine bay, and it grips slightly better in an oily hand. The chrome plating underneath it is what stops corrosion inside the hex, and corrosion inside a hex rounds off its corners, after which the socket starts rounding fasteners.
The buyers are vehicle and commercial vehicle mechanics, exhaust and manifold specialists, engine rebuilders, agricultural and plant fitters, general maintenance workshops, and hardware dealers supplying the motor trade.
Use a standard socket wherever it will reach, since a shorter barrel is stiffer and better aligned on a seized fastener. Seat the socket fully before applying force. And never put a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench, because plated hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under hammering and can crack and throw fragments. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
