Twelve millimetres deep is the reach-in size for M8 studs in the Japanese and Asian fastener pattern, which puts it on brackets, clamps, manifold and exhaust studs, pump and ancillary mountings, and the general run of medium-duty assembly on the vehicles and machinery most common here.
The specific case a deep socket answers is a nut with thread standing proud of it. On a stud, the thread continues past the nut by design, and a standard socket bottoms out on that thread before its hex ever reaches the flats. It simply will not go on, and forcing it achieves nothing. The deep barrel swallows the protruding stud and lets the socket seat properly.
The second case is depth rather than protrusion: a nut or bolt head sitting at the bottom of a recess, a counterbore or a channel, where the walls stop a standard socket and its ratchet from getting near. That situation is common around engine ancillaries and inside machinery housings.
There is one thing worth knowing about how a deep socket behaves. Because the barrel is long, the wall has to stay slender enough to fit into the space, and a long slender tube twists slightly more under load than a short thick one. It also holds the ratchet further from the work, which magnifies any misalignment along that extra length. None of that matters on a normal fastener; on a badly seized one it does, and the standard socket is the stiffer, better-aligned tool. The sensible rule is to use a standard socket whenever it will reach, and a deep one only when it will not.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the grain of the steel around the hexagonal form instead of cutting through it at the six corners where stress concentrates. Chrome vanadium supplies hardness and wear resistance together with toughness.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, exhaust and manifold specialists, pump and machinery fitters, agricultural and plant workshops, and hardware dealers supplying garages.
Seat it fully before loading, and never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench — plated hardened chrome vanadium cracks under impact hammering and throws pieces. Impact work needs black chrome molybdenum impact sockets. Ask on WhatsApp for a price, singly or as a set.
