There is one thing about hex recesses worth understanding, because it explains most of the trouble people have with them. A hex socket head has only six flat faces and comparatively little depth, so the tool has less to grip than a Torx of the same size. When the recess fills with corrosion, paint or dirt, the bit cannot seat to its full depth and ends up bearing only on the top few millimetres of the faces. Under an impact gun that shallow engagement rounds the recess out almost immediately, and a rounded socket head bolt has to be drilled out or extracted. So the single most valuable habit with these is to clean the recess properly first — pick the dirt out, blow it clear, tap the bit fully home with a hammer if necessary — and only then apply power.

The material is chrome molybdenum, heat treated, with a chemical molybdenum corrosion coating rather than chrome plating. Chrome molybdenum is specified for toughness instead, absorbing shock and deforming rather than fracturing, and a slender bit shank is exactly the shape where that matters most.
