3/8" (10-110N.m) Torque Wrench

The reason to choose 3/8" rather than the 1/2" wrench with the identical 10 to 110 N.m range is access, and it is a real difference. A 3/8" drive head is slimmer and shorter, and the wrench itself is lighter and easier to swing in a crowded engine bay. Since most fasteners in that range are 10 to 17mm and take 3/8" sockets naturally, using a 3/8" wrench avoids an adaptor as well — and every adaptor in the chain is another joint that can flex and another thing to foul on something. If your work is engine and ancillary assembly, this is the one. If it is suspension, hubs and chassis, the 1/2" version is the better match because the sockets are bigger.

The accuracy is ±3%, which is proper working accuracy for a mechanical wrench. The head is a 72-tooth chrome molybdenum ratchet — the fine tooth count giving a five degree swing arc, which matters because torque wrenches are frequently used in exactly the confined spaces where a coarse ratchet cannot advance at all. Chrome molybdenum in the head is the tough alloy choice for a mechanism carrying real load. The handle is aluminium, which keeps the weight down without flexing.

Why torque figures exist is worth stating plainly. A bolt is a spring — tightening stretches it, and that stretch produces the clamping force holding the joint together. Under-tightened, it works loose under vibration. Over-tightened, it is stretched past its elastic limit, permanently weakened, and liable to fail later. On a cylinder head, both errors mean a gasket failure.
