An impact wrench does not turn a fastener smoothly. Inside it a hammer spins up and strikes an anvil thousands of times a minute, delivering the torque as a rapid series of blows. That is what breaks seized fasteners loose, and it is also brutal on whatever is attached. A chrome hand socket is made from chrome vanadium, hardened for wear resistance and then chrome plated, and the combination is hard and comparatively brittle. Use impact-rated extensions and adaptors too, not chrome ones, since a slender chrome extension bar is the component most likely to snap.
