1/2" Torque Wrench (10-110N.m)

Half-inch is the drive most workshops standardise on, so if your sockets are 1/2" this wrench uses them directly with no adaptor in the chain. That matters more than it sounds: every adaptor adds a joint that can flex, adds length that can foul on something, and adds another component whose square can wear. For suspension, chassis, hub and driveline work — where the fasteners are 17mm and up and the sockets are naturally 1/2" — this is the correct tool. For engine bay and ancillary work in tight spaces with 10 to 17mm fasteners, the 3/8" version has a slimmer head and is easier to get in.

The range itself, 10 to 110 N.m, covers an enormous amount of everyday vehicle work: cylinder head and manifold bolts, brake caliper and carrier bolts, gearbox and bellhousing fixings, suspension link and bush bolts on lighter vehicles, and general chassis assembly. It is the range most general workshops use most often.

Accuracy is ±3%. The head is a 72-tooth chrome molybdenum ratchet: the fine tooth count gives a five degree swing arc, which is what allows the wrench to be used in the confined spaces where torque-critical fasteners so often live, and chrome molybdenum is the tough alloy appropriate for a mechanism under real load. The handle is aluminium, light and rigid.

The habit that keeps a click wrench accurate is simple and widely ignored: wind it back to its lowest setting before it goes away. The mechanism works by a calibrated spring, and leaving that spring compressed for weeks is what makes a torque wrench read progressively low. A wrench that reads low over-tightens everything you use it on, silently, which is worse than not using one at all because you believe the numbers.

Use it for final tightening only — undoing a tight fastener with a torque wrench damages the mechanism and there is a breaker bar for that. Stop at the click rather than pulling through it.
