The 72-tooth mechanism is the specification that matters most in daily use. Tooth count sets the swing arc, which is how far the handle has to move before the pawl catches the next tooth and the socket actually turns. Seventy-two teeth means a five degree arc. A coarse 24-tooth ratchet needs fifteen degrees.
