On a straight ratchet the handle runs in line with the head. On a curved one the handle sweeps away from the head before running back, and that offset does two things. It lifts your hand clear of the surrounding metal — so when the fastener is recessed, or sits next to a manifold, a chassis rail or a pulley, your knuckles have somewhere to be that is not in contact with something hot or sharp. Anybody who has taken skin off the back of a hand on an exhaust manifold knows exactly what that is worth. And the curve gives a slightly different angle of attack, which sometimes lets the ratchet reach a fastener that the straight one simply cannot line up with.

The trade is that the offset puts your hand a little away from the axis of the fastener, so you feel marginally less of what is happening at the nut, and the tool needs a little more room to sweep. Most workshops that do a lot of engine bay work own both and pick by the obstruction in front of them.

The 72-tooth mechanism governs the swing arc — five degrees between engagements, against fifteen for a coarse 24-tooth ratchet. In a confined space that is the difference between the tool working and clicking uselessly, and confined spaces are exactly where a curved shank is chosen.

Quick release drops the socket at the press of a button rather than needing it prised off, and holds it securely until then.

The same discipline applies as to any fine ratchet. Use a solid breaker bar or L-wrench for the initial crack on a seized fastener, because fine teeth are small teeth and the mechanism is the part that breaks. Keep it clean and lightly oiled.
