An L-type wrench, sometimes called a speed brace or a sliding T-bar, is one of those tools that looks crude and turns out to be the fastest thing in the box for a particular set of jobs.
The idea is straightforward. It is a bar with a half-inch drive on one end and a right-angle bend, and it can be used two ways. Held as an L, the long arm gives real leverage for cracking a tight fastener loose — considerably more than a ratchet handle and with no ratchet mechanism to break. Then, once the fastener is moving, you swing it round and spin it: holding the short end and whirling the long arm makes the nut come off far faster than any ratchet can click. On a job with a dozen bolts of the same size, that changes the pace of the work entirely.
The absence of a mechanism is the second advantage and it is worth appreciating. A ratchet contains a pawl and fine teeth, and those teeth are the weakest part of any socket set — when a ratchet fails, it is almost always the mechanism, usually at the exact moment you are heaving on it. An L-bar has nothing to fail. It is a solid piece of forged steel, so it will take the kind of abuse that destroys ratchets, which makes it the sensible tool for the initial crack on anything seized.
It is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Chrome vanadium supplies hardness and wear resistance to keep the drive square crisp, and toughness so the bar bends rather than snapping if it is ever overloaded.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, tyre and wheel fitters, plant and agricultural fitters, engineering and maintenance workshops, and hardware dealers supplying garages.
Two practical notes. When spinning it, keep your fingers clear of the arc — a spinning bar catches knuckles on anything nearby. And do not slide a pipe over it for extra leverage; if a fastener will not move with an L-bar, the answer is penetrating oil, time and heat rather than more force, because the next thing to give will be the fastener or the component rather than the tool. Never use a chrome hand tool on an impact wrench. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price, or for it alongside a ratchet.
