Both of those are worse than they look. An 8mm on a 9mm nut simply will not go. A 10mm on a 9mm nut engages only at the very corners of the hex, and under load those corners are what deform. That is how a fastener gets rounded off, and a rounded nut turns a two-minute job into an hour with a chisel, a stud extractor or a grinder. Having the correct size is not fussiness; it is the difference between removing a fastener and destroying it.

That is the general case for buying the odd sizes rather than only the popular ones. The sizes nobody stocks are the ones that stop a job dead, and they cost very little to have in the drawer.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. The matt finish is worth noticing. A mirror-polished socket looks better in a display case, but matt chrome does not throw glare back at you under a work lamp, and it holds a slightly better grip in an oily hand. On a tool used in engine bays and under machinery, that is the practical choice.

Chrome vanadium is the standard alloy for hand sockets — chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness — and the chrome plating over it resists the corrosion that would otherwise attack a tool constantly exposed to oil, water and road salt.

The buyers are vehicle and motorcycle mechanics working on Japanese models, machinery and equipment fitters, appliance repair technicians, maintenance staff, and hardware dealers who know their customers ask for the sizes sets leave out.

Never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench: chrome-plated chrome vanadium is hard and brittle, and impact hammering cracks it.
