1/2" Hexagon Socket (8mm)

Why it exists in this drive size at all is simple: workshops do not want to change tools halfway down a job. If everything else on the assembly is 13 and 17mm, having the 8mm in the same drive means one ratchet and one tray.

The fasteners it fits are the small ones: M5 bolts and nuts, cover and guard screws, bracket and clip fixings, small hose clamps, trim and panel fasteners, sensor and switch mountings, and the light assembly work found all over vehicles, appliances and machinery.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Drop forging is worth a word because it is the specification that separates a socket that lasts from one that splits. The steel is heated and hammered into shape in a die, which flows its internal grain around the hexagonal form rather than cutting across it. A socket machined from bar stock has its grain running straight through, and the corners of the hex — where all the stress concentrates — are exactly where that grain gets cut. Forged sockets split far less often, and when they do let go they tend to spread rather than burst.

Chrome vanadium is the standard alloy for hand sockets: chromium for hardness and wear resistance, vanadium for grain refinement and toughness.

One important limit. A chrome-finished hand socket must never be used on an impact wrench. Chrome plating over hardened chrome vanadium is hard and comparatively brittle, and the hammering of an impact gun cracks it — pieces come off at speed.
