The crankshaft pulley bolt is the job worth talking about, because it is the one that most often brings people to this size and it is genuinely difficult. That bolt is tightened very hard at the factory, it has usually been there for years, and it sits on the end of a shaft that turns — so the first problem is not torque at all, it is stopping the engine rotating while you apply force. Attacking it with an ever-longer bar while the crankshaft turns achieves nothing except a bent tool and, occasionally, damage inside the engine. The job needs the crank locked properly first.

The second thing to be honest about at this size is drive rating. Every square drive has a sensible torque ceiling, and half-inch is a general workshop standard rather than a heavy one. Crank bolts and large hub nuts are frequently specified above what a half-inch drive should carry. Push past it and either the ratchet's drive square twists off or the socket's square spreads, and you are left with a broken tool and a tight fastener. A three-quarter inch drive, or a torque multiplier, is the correct answer for regular work at this level, and there is a 3/4" ratchet in this range for exactly that reason.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the steel's grain around the hexagonal form instead of cutting through it, keeping unbroken metal through the six corners where all the stress concentrates — which matters more the larger the socket and the higher the load.

Seat the socket completely before applying force, give penetrating oil and heat a proper chance before reaching for more leverage, and never put a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench, because plated hardened chrome vanadium cracks under impact hammering and throws pieces.
