Twenty-seven millimetres is a big socket and it belongs to specific jobs: hub and axle nuts on light commercials and trucks, large driveline fasteners, heavy machinery mountings, agricultural implement fixings, and structural and plant bolting.
At this size the most useful thing to understand is what a half-inch drive can and cannot reasonably do. The square drive is the weakest link in the chain between your hands and the fastener, and each drive size has a sensible torque ceiling. Half-inch is the general workshop standard and it covers the great majority of vehicle work comfortably. But hub and axle nuts are frequently specified at torques that push right up against that ceiling, and some are well past it. Force a half-inch drive there and one of two things happens: the drive square on the ratchet twists, or the square inside the socket spreads. Either way you have destroyed a tool while the nut is still tight.
That is not a reason to avoid this socket — it is a reason to know when the job wants a three-quarter inch drive, or a torque multiplier, rather than a longer bar on a half-inch ratchet. There is a 3/4" ratchet in this range for exactly that reason. If you are removing hub nuts regularly, that is the conversation worth having before you buy.
The other habit at this size is preparation. A 27mm nut that has been on a vehicle for years is not coming off through enthusiasm. Penetrating oil, real waiting time, heat applied to the outer component so it expands away from the thread, and a sharp shock from a hammer will free far more of them than raw leverage, and none of those methods breaks anything.
The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the grain of the steel around the hexagonal form rather than cutting through it at the corners where the stress concentrates.
The buyers are commercial vehicle, truck and bus workshops, plant and heavy equipment mechanics, agricultural and plantation engineering, industrial maintenance, and hardware dealers supplying heavy trades.
Seat it fully before loading, and never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench — plated hardened chrome vanadium cracks under hammering and throws fragments. Message us on WhatsApp with the job you have in mind and we will tell you honestly whether this or a 3/4" setup is the right answer.
