Twenty-four millimetres is the standard head size for M16 fasteners, which puts it squarely in structural and heavy machinery territory: chassis and subframe bolting, heavy suspension and hub components, structural steel connections, large machine mountings, agricultural implements, and plant and generator installations.

M16 is a size where the numbers get serious. A bolt that big is carrying real load and is tightened to a torque figure high enough that it genuinely matters. That has two consequences. On the way out, these fasteners are often extremely tight and, if they live outdoors or underneath something, thoroughly corroded — so penetrating oil, time and heat are the productive approach rather than an ever-longer bar. On the way in, they need a torque wrench, because a structural bolt that has been guessed at is either loose enough to work free under vibration or stretched past its yield point and permanently weakened.

There is a tool question worth raising at this size too. A half-inch drive is being asked to carry a good deal here. It handles M16 work, but as you continue up through 27, 30 and 32mm the torque required climbs past what a half-inch square should reasonably transmit, and a three-quarter inch drive becomes the correct tool. If most of your work is at this end of the range, it is worth thinking about drive size rather than only socket size — a twisted-off drive square is an unpleasant surprise.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the steel's grain around the hexagonal shape rather than cutting through it, keeping unbroken metal at the six corners where the stress concentrates. Chrome vanadium provides hardness and wear resistance from chromium and toughness from vanadium.

Seat the socket fully before applying force, use six-point engagement on anything corroded, and never put a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench — plated hardened chrome vanadium cracks under impact hammering and throws pieces.
