1/2" Hexagon Socket (22mm)

Fasteners at this size are almost always tight, and that raises a point about how to deal with them that saves both time and money. The instinctive response to a bolt that will not move is more leverage — a longer bar, a pipe over the handle, another person. That works right up until something breaks, and what breaks is rarely the tool. It is the fastener shearing off inside its housing, or the thread stripping in the component, and either turns a bolt removal into a drilling and extraction job or a component replacement. On a seized 22mm fastener the productive order is penetrating oil first, then time — a genuine twenty minutes, not two — then heat applied around the outside of the female part so it expands away from the thread, then shock from a hammer, and only then more leverage. That sequence frees far more fasteners than brute force does.

Torque matters on the way back too. Hub and driveline nuts have specified figures, sometimes with a specified stretch or angle, and they are not figures to guess at.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish. Forging flows the steel's grain around the hexagonal form instead of cutting across it, keeping unbroken metal through the six corners where all the stress concentrates. Chrome vanadium supplies hardness and wear resistance from the chromium and toughness from the vanadium.

Two rules. Seat the socket fully on the fastener before applying any force, because a socket engaged only at the tips of the hex is how a nut of this size gets rounded — and a rounded 22mm nut is a serious problem. And never use a chrome hand socket on an impact wrench: chrome-plated hardened chrome vanadium is brittle under impact hammering and cracks, throwing fragments at speed.
