Wheel nuts deserve a specific word, because this is where the most common and most dangerous mistake in home mechanics happens. Wheel nuts have a torque figure and it exists for a reason at both ends. Under-tightened, they work loose and a wheel comes off. Over-tightened — which is what happens when they are rattled on with an impact gun or heaved on with a long bar — the studs are stretched, and a stretched stud can snap later under load, which produces the same result. They also warp brake discs. The correct method is to tighten by hand in a star pattern and finish with a torque wrench, and it takes an extra minute.

There is a second warning that belongs here more than anywhere else in the range. This is a chrome-plated hand socket, and it must never be used on an impact wrench. Chrome-plated hardened chrome vanadium is hard and comparatively brittle; the rapid hammering of an impact gun cracks it, and pieces come off at speed, usually right beside your hands and face. Wheel work is exactly where people are tempted to reach for the impact gun with whatever socket is nearest. Impact guns take black chrome molybdenum impact sockets — thicker walled, unplated, and made from a tougher alloy specifically for this — and there is a set of them in this range.

The socket is drop forged from fine chrome vanadium with a matt chrome finish, the forging flowing the steel's grain around the hexagonal form rather than cutting through it at the six corners where the stress concentrates.
